5 Key Benefits of Coaching

In this week's sharing, we will be touching on some common perceptions about coaching as well as our perspective about what are some benefits that coaching could bring to your career, family and life.

Common Perceptions of Coaching

1) Coaching is only meant for professional sports players and high level executives

Most people believe that unless you holding a senior management position or a professional sports player, coaching is not really useful or relevant.

2) I do not need coaching because I am doing fine at the moment

All of us would probably agree that we will experience more satisfaction at work when we are performing well. Yet most of us would be willing to just settle for mediocrity and even choose to take a passive stance towards creating success or identifying areas for improvement.

3) Coaching is costly: I cannot afford the time and/or financial resources

Most of us have very busy schedules and often lament that we do not have sufficient time to finish up our tasks. What if coaching could actually help in better organising your resources and improve your work/business performance? Eventually, effective coaching should result in enabling you to achieve more with lesser resources and to enjoy a better quality of life.

The Case for Coaching

Professional coaching brings many wonderful benefits: fresh perspectives on personal challenges, enhanced decision-making skills, greater interpersonal effectiveness, and increased confidence. And, the list does not end there. Those who undertake coaching also can expect appreciable improvement in productivity, satisfaction with life and work, and the attainment of relevant goals. Benefits of Coaching

So, how does coaching benefit an individual or an organisation?

Here is our attempt in sharing some benefits that coaching helps to achieve:

1) Opportunity for reflections and identifying blindspots

Business owners are often swarmed with day to day operational tasks and they hardly set aside time for reflection. Scheduling coaching sessions will enable them to deliberately set aside time to identify underlying issues that could be hindering their business growth.

2) Removing obstacles and overcoming challenges through shifting mindsets

There may be occasions where we have created a set of belief systems that would have restricted our ability and will to act in certain situations. For example, we could have made certain assumptions (which may not be fully valid) about people or problems that we face, thereby limiting our effectiveness in overcoming challenges.

3) Creates a sense of motivation and will to overcome difficult challenges

At times, we may just need a little push or motivation to cross the finishing line. Many of us tend to quit the journey or fall short of expectations because we become discouraged along the way. One of the practical ways that a coach can help to create motivation is to breakdown the bigger goals into achievable targets. With more milestones along the way and someone charting your progress, the journey forward becomes much easier.

4) Enhances performance and maximises existing resources

A good coach is always aware of your current resources, capabilities and performance level. Such insights would be essential in setting realistic goals. He/she should also be well-positioned and equipped to help you to unlock your hidden potential and abilities in order to bring your performance up to the next level.

5) Acts as an accountability partner for goals and targets set

We all had experiences about goals and new year resolutions not being achieved. Part of the main cause of failure could be attributed to setting unrealistic targets and/or not having an accountability partner to keep track of your progress. According to a Harvard Business Review article, studies have shown that sharing your goals with your spouse and being in a community would increase your chances of fulfilling your goals significantly.

Whether you are intending to grow your business, achieve better performance at work or create greater fulfilment for your life, partnering with a coach could be one of the most effective step towards achieving these goals.
